For over 2,000 years, Yoga, meaning the unity of the body and the vital life force, has been practiced. The programme unites the body with the mind and consists of a series of slow, gentle stretches accompanied by deep, steady breathing. It strengthens the body while calming and awakening the spirit.
"The deep, steady breathing of Yoga is believed to balance the nervous system and improve circulation,"
The purpose and philosophy of Yoga is to bring unison between mind, body and spirit, through specific exercises, breathing and meditation.
Yoga postures (asanas) are excellent for developing and maintaining the flexibility and muscle strength. They also help you to relax. At this physical level yoga contributes a great deal to fitness and well-being.
However, Yoga asanas should not just work on the physical body but also on the subtle bodies- because there is a focus on inner awareness of breathing and the internal sensations, as well as the physical positions themselves, this activates the etheric body more strongly than ordinary exercise.
The activation also extends into the emotional and mental body. The aim of the asanas is to align these bodies, helping to restore health wherever in the subtle bodies the originating problem might be.
Yoga is a combination of exercise and meditation rooted in Hindu religious practices. It has been practiced in Eastern cultures for about 5,000 years and has fairly recently been "discovered" and popularized in Western society. The word Yoga means "to bring together or merge" — as in joining the mind and body into a single harmonious unit. The purpose of Yoga is to create strength, awareness, and harmony in both the mind and body.
More than one hundred different types, or schools, of Yoga exist; most sessions are typically comprised of breathing exercises, meditation, and assuming postures (sometimes called poses) that stretch and flex various muscle groups.
