Practicing Yoga during Pregnancy
Before we go on to talk about Yoga, benefits and positions (asanas), it should be remembered that it is a great privilege to be chosen as mother by the soul of your baby. This is like no other special bond on this earth nor in this life that you will ever find. It is truly unconditional love from the universe and you have been chosen. You have much to learn from this new little soul if you can tune in to it. It has much to offer being a sensitive, intelligent being who is full of love for you, it's Mother. During pregnancy you intuitively sense and feel what the baby needs and desires from you. There will be two way communication and love will grow daily.
Yoga and meditation is one way of fine-tuning your feelings and bonding.
It is always advisable to have an experienced teacher during and after pregnancy, preferably one who has gone through pregnancy herself. This ensures that an empathy exists and the practical needs and requirements are known.Zita is such a teacher and has two grown up children, a boy and a girl. She has taught many pregnant mums and seen the new and beautiful souls born out of the pregnancies.
There are some general guidelines of course, as you would imagine.
If you were practising Yoga before pregnancy then you can carry on with postures as long as you feel comfortable...This is important, listen to your body, don't push it hard, you may find you need to do more of the relaxation positions and that is perfectly alright. Your body needs to be softer for pregnancy and able to expand comfortably. Great care must be taken with some postures.
Do not continue doing Salutation to the Sun, any arm balances or twists that restrict baby in any way.
In early pregnancy, you may be able to lie on your front with a folded blanket under the pubis but as soon as this is uncomfortable, stop doing it.
This is not the time to start doing new postures, stick to the known ones and listen to your Yoga teacher.
If you were not practising Yoga before pregnancy then you need to listen very carefully to your Yoga teacher. Many people who have never done Yoga are attracted during pregnancy because it can ease labour and birth pains. Yoga also has been extremely helpful in relieving back pain, especially during the pregnancy. You can also feel more in control with breathing excercises and feel more supple, giving rise to a more positive mental attitude at this very special time of life. It is important to take it gently and slowly.
Practicing Yoga after Pregnancy
Relaxation and gentle recovery are essential for the student of Yoga. The body needs time to recover from the physical and hormonal changes it has just been through. This could be two or three months. Take time to be with your new baby, learn to adjust to the new little soul and tune in to both your needs. Allow yourself to be, it will only be for a short while. Try daily meditation, communicate and talk to your baby, reassure it on a heart to heart level. When you feel ready to start Yoga, do the postures without any strain being mindful of all the changes you have gone through.
